Union

Back

Dr Sam Bostock

My research is focused on atonement, soteriology and federal theology in the Reformed orthodox tradition. My PhD was completed in 2023 at Union Theological College on the rise of the covenant of redemption in the theology of Samuel Rutherford. In addition to adjunct teaching work with Union, I serve as minister of a congregation in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. I have published articles in Primer, Modern Reformation, and Foundations.

Currently I am working on scholarly introductions to two of Rutherford’s major works of soteriology, and a systematic argument for the primacy of the cross in the order of God’s decrees. Longer term projects include exploration of Franciscus Gomarus’ contributions to the development of covenant theology.

I have recently supervised postgraduate studies of:

Samuel Rutherford’s theology of the Lord’s supper

Stephen Charnock’s Christological treatment of the attributes of God

Areas of Research Supervision

I especially welcome expressions of interest in postgraduate supervision in the following areas:

 The life or thought of Samuel Rutherford or associated divines;

Covenant or atonement theology, whether historical or systematic;

The role of legal concepts in systematic theology;

The voluntarist tradition and its place in Reformed theology.
