Dr Martyn Cowan

I am particularly interested in discussing projects on aspects of early modern history or historical theology, especially in relation to John Owen (1616-1683), the Westminster Assembly, and the study of the early modern sermon. More generally, I am open to discuss the possibility of research in other aspects of seventeenth-century history and theology.

In terms of my own research, I am editing five volumes of sermons which will be included in Crossway’s 40-volume edition of the works of Owen. I am also one of the editors preparing a critical edition of hitherto unpublished auditors’ notes of sermons by Owen that is contracted to Oxford University Press.

I am currently supervising two PhD students writing dissertations on Owen and Stephen Charnock (1628-1680).
